Diversity Week at MSU features “Bomba, a Celebration of Sight and Sound” November 12 – 19, 2005.  Reception November 12, 2005 6:30 PM SHARP!

The rich, cultural, textures of Puerto Rico will be reflected in “Bomba, a Celebration of Sight and Sound” featuring Visual artist- Antonio Broccoli Porto, Fashion designer- Aileen Gonzaléz Martí and Musical performers- “Segunda Quimbamba”.

In celebration of Diversity Week, Montclair State University-Community Outreach Department will present a collaborative showcase highlighting two artists from Puerto Rico.  Viewers will experience Antonio Broccoli Porto’s Afro-Caribbean collection.

This body of work is based primarily on the musical themes and traditions from Loiza, Puerto Rico, a town whose African traditions have remained unchanged for almost 300 years, the hotbed of a popular Puerto Rican dance known as “Bomba”.  Bomba, a musical genre unique to Puerto Rico which utilizes drumming and percussion rhythms in relation to very stylized dance movements that dictated and created the musical composition spontaneously.  Just as the title of the exhibition declares, Bomba is a Celebration of Sight and Sound, and it is just that! This eclectic collection of art and installations exposes the viewer to the overpowering colorful settings of the deep Caribbean extracted from the traditions of the ancestors of the African Slaves that settled in this region of Puerto Rico.  Porto a romanticist by nature, displays a myriad of musical themed works expressing the noble qualities that have been persevered for over three centuries.  Among the pieces, there will also be several installations representing the Yoruba religious traditions inherent of these people.

Aileen Gonzaléz Martí will accompany Porto, a Puerto Rican Fashion Designer and creator of Miss Universe, Puerto Rico’s 2003 wardrobe.  Ms. Marti will be premiering a series of works inspired by Porto’s paintings.  Her influence will add a third dimension to the show.  The exhibition will prove to be a colorful treat for the senses.  Saturday, November 12th,   the local Puerto Rican group “Segunda Quimbamba” will perform

and demonstrate the Dance rhythms and music of Bomba.

The exhibition will be also showcased at Essex Community College Exhibition Hall Opening on November 21 at 3:30PM , showing through December 05, 2005.
